Healthy New Year!

Today is officially the last day of January and many people are already confessing to cheating on their New Year's Resolution diets. If this is you, there's no need to feel ashamed. It can be very difficult to keep up with a goal that seems impossible to reach, especially without help.

The 24-year-old founder of the website exploringhealthyfoods.com makes eating healthy food look easy and effortless. She refers to herself as Brittney D. and agreed to do an interview, sharing some of her secrets to living a healthy life.

This Canadian native attended the University of Manitoba and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Nutritional Sciences with a minor in Psychology. With more than 4,000 followers on Instagram, her goal is for all of her followers to know that eating healthy is all about balance and enjoying healthy foods that they love. The consistent theme of her posts is that having a healthy lifestyle can be fun, quick, and easy.

Here's my inside scoop with the lady behind the food:

Me: What made you want to get a degree in nutritional science?

Brittney: I started dancing (jazz, ballet, lyrical) when I was 10 years old, and that’s really when my interest in nutrition started. I loved reading the nutrition facts and ingredients on food labels. Looking back, I had no idea what I was reading, but I was so fascinated by them and compared food labels all the time. That led me to my degree in Human Nutrition Sciences. I can definitely say I’m much better at reading food labels now.

Me: Was your family supportive of your decision to pursue a degree in nutritional science?

Brittney: Definitely! My family is always supportive of whatever I do. They encouraged me to pursue nutrition because they knew that's what I was very interested in.

Me: Where do you shop for most of your food?

Brittney: During the spring and summer, I love going to the Farmer's Market and stocking up on fresh local produce. There is nothing better than walking around the Farmer’s Market on a sunny Saturday with my friends, checking out the new produce. In the wintertime, I normally shop at Vita Health, Superstore, or we also have this local delivery service that is great for getting seasonal produce. Other than that, I like to go to Bulk Barn for dried fruits, nuts, seeds, flours, etc. (as it is a lot cheaper in bulk).

Me: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Brittney: My biggest inspiration would have to be Oprah. She goes for what she wants, she’s unafraid to say what she’s thinking, but she’s also very positive.  I love watching YouTube videos of her giving speeches at universities. She’s super inspirational!

Me: She is, but you’re also inspirational to so many people with your posts. What’s your favorite meal to prepare in the kitchen?

Brittney: My favorite meal would have to be a hummus wrap that is loaded with fresh veggies! I love my carbs and this meal takes under 10 minutes to make!

Me: How do you avoid tempting foods?

Brittney: This is definitely something that I know a lot of people struggle with, myself included. I would say top tips when you are craving or tempted by unhealthy foods would be to find an activity to do that would distract you from the food, such as going for a walk, calling a friend, or even brushing your teeth. You won’t want to eat after that!

Me: I wouldn’t want to eat after that!

Brittney: Keep healthy foods in your fridge or your pantry. That way, when you’re hungry, you only have healthy options.

Me: A lot of people have already confessed to me that they’ve cheated on their healthy eating plans this year. What advice would you give to them? Where would they begin?

Brittney: I would suggest starting off slow. Make a goal each week, such as eating at least 5 vegetables a day, and doing that each day for the week. Create goals that you know you will be able to achieve. The following week, add another goal, such as drinking at least two liters of water every day. Continue to build, adding healthy foods to your lifestyle and eliminating unhealthy foods. If you fall off track a bit, don’t worry. Realize that what you are eating is not healthy but it’s all about balance, so don’t beat yourself up over it! Just refocus. For more tips with eating healthier I would definitely recommend checking out my Back to Basics Nutrition eBook. There are so many great tips in there. I also have free resource guides on my blog!

Me: Thank you so much for the inside scoop!

Brittney: Thanks for having me. I really enjoyed this interview.
